Chapter Fifteen

Not everything in the garden is rosy

_____

Catherine and Georgina stood side by side behind the counter. Each doing their job proficiently. Each ignoring the other. They had not exchanged one word after their disagreement.

Rachel finished clearing the tables and said, “I’m fed up with the pair of you. You are turning the milk sour. Now go into the office and sort it out. We can’t be having the pair of you putting the customers off. I will be able to cope better without you both anyway. Now go and sort it before I walk out and decide not to come back.”

“You wouldn’t dare.” Georgina gasped.

“Try me,” she said as she picked up her jacket and walked to the exit.

“Okay.” Georgina panicked and stopped what she was doing.

Catherine huffed and made her way to the office, followed closely by Georgina.

They stood either side of the room with their arms crossed. Neither making the effort to sort out the differences.

“Well.” Catherine suddenly said. “What have you got to say for yourself. It had better be good.”

Georgina was speechless. Her mouth gaped, “Me. What have I got to say?”

She stared at the woman opposite for some time. Hurt was etched on Catherine’s face. Georgina felt her mouth go dry. She licked her lips and swallowed. She realised at that moment that what she said was wrong, but knowing she was wrong and doing something about it was two different matters. She looked away embarrassed.

She glanced back and promised herself that she would put it right. After all, it was her foolishness that had started this spat.

Georgina spoke in a voice made soft, breaking the silence and awkward tension between us. “I’m sorry.”

Catherine’s face remained placid as she stayed quiet for a moment. “Excuse me?” she replied as if she hadn’t heard her properly.

“Please find it in yourself to forgive me.”

A frown creased her brow as Catherine again wondered if she had heard correctly, she had been expecting another tirade of angry words but was greeted by a soft apology. An apology that sounded heartfelt.

“I said, I’m sorry.” Georgina continued apologising. “Please find it within yourself to forgive me.”

Catherine looked at Georgina in disbelief. Did she think those words would make it better, but the softness and the sadness of Georgina’s voice began to penetrate the barrier she had placed around herself. She shrugged her shoulders and replied, “What you said really hurt.”

Emotion was building inside Catherine. She looked down and avoided Georgina’s eyes. She needed a few seconds to compose herself.

“I know.” Georgina looked over at her. “It was completely unacceptable, totally hurtful, not true and I’m sorry,” Georgina said earnestly.

Catherine pursed her lips as if in pain and nodded. When both of them stayed silent, an awkward tension took hold of the air. Not of anger, but something else. Something equally as powerful. Georgina had felt it before with her, but this time it was much stronger. As though a major storm was brewing. As with all storms, would the tension in the air be cleared, or would there be irreversible damage?

Catherine shook her head.
